<p>Artificial intelligence is providing the U.S. Secret Service with new capabilities to carry out its protective and investigative missions, the agency’s IT and AI lead said on Thursday, with further adoption of the technologies poised to help it respond even better to future risk environments. </p><p>Given the Secret Service’s directive to both safeguard top U.S. officials and visiting dignitaries and to conduct criminal investigations, Chief Information Officer and Chief AI Officer Chris Kraft said “we have to look broadly at what's the art of the possible” when it comes to leveraging AI for its operations.</p><p>While Secret Service, like other federal agencies, has leveraged AI to streamline mundane back-office operations or other rote tasks — Kraft noted during the <a href="https://events.govexec.com/sap-public-sector-summit-2026/" target="_blank">SAP Public Sector Summit</a> in Washington, D.C., that “with generative AI, there's huge opportunity to automate things, such as invoice processing or contracts or other capabilities” — its unique mission positions it to utilize some of the more cutting-edge AI capabilities.</p><p>The service is trying to navigate an unprecedented threat environment with an <a href="https://www.fedweek.com/federal-managers-daily-report/reports-cite-impact-of-short-staffing-at-secret-service-irs/" target="_blank">understaffed workforce</a>. During an <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/secret-service-confronts-rise-in-threats-to-protectees-60-minutes-transcript/" target="_blank">interview</a> with 60 Minutes on Sunday, Secret Service Director Sean Curran said threats against the agency’s full-time protectees are up more than 40% since last year, with around 10,000 threats made on those individuals since January. </p><p>“I believe that artificial intelligence can help us as we investigate those threats, monitor those threats [and] bring together correlations between seemingly disparate information,” Kraft said, referencing Curran’s interview. “I also think when you look at facial recognition and biometrics, [you see] the things that you can do — and at scale — with artificial intelligence.”</p><p>Kraft said, for instance, that an object detection tool could help the agency quickly identify how many individuals are in one space “at a speed that a human is not able to do that.”</p><p>The Secret Service currently lists three AI use cases in <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/si/use-case-inventory/usss" target="_blank">its most recent public inventory</a>, with two of those uses — a model to support criminal investigations through facial recognition matches and another that is used to decipher license plates from poor-quality images or videos — currently deployed by the agency. Kraft said the agency’s AI adoption is meant to empower Secret Service’s human agents to better carry out their duties.</p><p>In <a href="https://www.nextgov.com/artificial-intelligence/2026/04/secret-service-embedding-ai-experts-across-agency/412646/" target="_blank">an interview with <em>Nextgov/FCW</em></a><em> </em>earlier this year, Kraft also said the Secret Service is working to embed AI specialists across its operations to help drive further adoption of AI tools. </p><p>Kraft highlighted that initiative on Thursday and said developing an internal AI team will allow experts to “go and work with different parts of the organization and accelerate, where it makes sense, our adoption of the technology.”</p></div></div>

In a letter to Secret Service Director Sean Curran last week, Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) asked how the agency would have spent the roughly $415 million dollars that was redirected from its budget. Hassan wants to know whether that has affected the Secret Service’s modernization efforts, including its ongoing hiring campaign. The service is looking for service members with backgrounds in space operations, cyber, intelligence, acquisition and engineering. The program covers the full cost of tuition and academic fees, as well as room and board. Those accepted into the program will also receive a stipend and paid summer internships. In exchange, scholarship recipients will be required to work for the Defense Department for at least one year for each year of funding they receive. The program was created to help the Defense Department better recruit and retain cyber and IT talent. Under the settlement, the Trump administration has agreed to inform agencies that all remaining shutdown-related reduction in force plans have been abandoned. Agencies have 30 days to remove any remaining references to shutdown RIF guidance from their websites and from their shutdown contingency plans. <li style="margin-top:20px;">The Office of Special Counsel won’t fully investigate whether agencies violated the Hatch Act with online messaging during the 2025 government shutdown. OSC concluded that some of the more inflammatory language posted on agency websites blaming last fall’s shutdown on Congressional Democrats “might” have violated the Hatch Act’s prohibition on partisan political activity. But in an assessment released Friday, the office concluded no further investigation or disciplinary action is warranted, because agencies relied on an ambiguous 2024 OSC advisory to explain those actions. OSC’s assessment shows some agencies didn’t even respond to the office regarding the Hatch Act complaints. <p>WASHINGTON— Reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico on Saturday said they were denied access to White House grounds after <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/09/19/nx-s1-5973250/week-in-politics-trump-bans-news-outlets-iran-war-mail-in-voting-interest-rates" target="_blank">President Trump</a> announced a ban on the three media outlets.</p> <div class="bucketwrap internallink insettwocolumn inset2col" id="resnx-s1-5974854-100">

<p>Trump said in a Truth Social post on Friday he was banning these outlets from the White House, citing negative coverage of his administration and saying media outlets shouldn't be able to constantly report "FICTION and LIES" when they cover the president of the United States. He warned other news outlets would follow. It's Trump's latest move in an <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/09/18/nx-s1-5974302/trump-threatens-cnn-msnow-and-politico" target="_blank">ongoing battle against the media</a>.</p> <p>On Friday afternoon, a Bloomberg News reporter asked Trump about the ban at a press conference and whether he was trying to intimidate the press. "No, no, no, no. I dislike dishonest press, like you. I think you're terrible," Trump responded.</p> 
<p>He also said: "They purposely write negative news, and they do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans and a Republican administration." Trump said there was no specific news story that led to his decision, instead it was a frustration that had built up over the last two years.</p> <p>On Saturday morning, MS NOW, formerly MSNBC, said in a <a href="https://x.com/MSNOWComms/status/2101282658550497740?s=20" target="_blank">statement on<u> X </u></a>that their journalists were unable to access the White House grounds. MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner said on air that she was denied access to the White House, and an officer asked her to "hand over" her badge because it was "disabled."</p> <p>"I asked why I was not able to get inside," Gardner said. "He said it was above him."</p> <p>However, Gardner said an MS NOW producer was able to access the grounds. MS NOW said they will continue to report on the president.</p> <p>"The White House belongs to the American people and the decisions made inside are funded by our tax dollars," MS NOW said in their <a href="https://x.com/MSNOWComms/status/2101282658550497740?s=20" target="_blank">statement</a>. "MS NOW intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy."</p>

<p>CNN reporter Betsy Klein said she was also denied access Saturday morning. Klein said she has been covering the White House in some capacity since the Obama administration, but on Saturday morning a Secret Service agent took her badge.</p> <p>"I asked him if he could provide an explanation as to why it had been deactivated. He said he had no further information," Klein said. She said she was referred to the White House press office.</p> <p>CNN said in a <a href="https://x.com/CNNPR/status/2101310670805377091/photo/1" target="_blank">statement on X</a> Saturday that they have "a right under the U.S. Constitution" to report without interference from the government.</p> <p>"We will not be deflected from our duty to hold the government and other public bodies to account, and we will continue to report on the actions and processes of this administration without fear our favor." </p> <p>Politico Global Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Greenberger told the newsroom on Saturday that Cheyenne Haslett, a White House reporter, was denied entry to the White House.</p> <p>"We stand by her and all reporters here covering the White House. As we said yesterday, we will vigorously defend our First Amendment rights," Greenberger said in a statement shared with NPR.</p> <p>Trump's announcement comes amid a midterm election season where <a href="https://www.npr.org/transcripts/nx-s1-5955739" target="_blank">Democrats have an edge</a> — Trump has faced pushback over his <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/03/06/nx-s1-5737627/iran-us-military-poll-trump-approval" target="_blank">unpopular war in the Middle East</a>, a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/09/02/nx-s1-5951976/trump-attempts-to-combat-high-gas-prices-as-affordability-crisis-looms-over-midterms" target="_blank">looming affordability crisis</a>, and threats to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/09/17/nx-s1-5973036/trump-threat-tear-down-kennedy-center" target="_blank">demolish the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center</a>.</p> <p>White House Correspondents' Association President Jacqui Heinrich <a href="https://x.com/whca/status/2101371576403050530" target="_blank">said Saturday</a> that denying access to journalists violates the First Amendment and called on the Trump administration to "immediately restore our colleagues' access."</p> <p>"The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably," she said in a statement. "That's why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting."</p> 
<p>Theodore Boutrous, a leading First Amendment lawyer in the U.S., <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/09/18/nx-s1-5974302/trump-threatens-cnn-msnow-and-politico" target="_blank">told NPR</a> that the ban is, on its face, unconstitutional.</p> <div class="bucketwrap internallink insettwocolumn inset2col" id="resnx-s1-5974854-101">

<p>Last year, Trump <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/02/11/nx-s1-5293524/ap-gulf-of-mexico-white-house-oval-office" target="_blank">barred an Associated Press reporter</a> from covering two official events because the news service did not refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. During his first term, Trump also <a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/11/07/665497382/white-house-revokes-press-pass-of-cnns-jim-acosta" target="_blank">barred a CNN reporter</a>. Courts have backed the media both times, but the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/04/08/nx-s1-5342369/ap-white-house-court-ruling-oval-office-gulf-of-mexico-america" target="_blank">AP ruling is still being appealed</a>.</p>

Three Secret Service officials have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation

<p>Three U.S. Secret Service officials were placed on administrative leave Tuesday, pending the outcome of an investigation by the agency’s professional standards office.</p>
<p>The three were operating in non-law-enforcement capacities and were being investigated for potential misconduct, the agency’s public information office reported. However, the cause for the action remained unclear as the Office of Professional Responsibility was beginning its review.</p>
<p>The Secret Service has been under scrutiny as President Donald Trump has been the subject of at least three assassination plots in the past two years. In April, police said an armed man breached security at the Washington Hilton during the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/white-house-correspondents-dinner-trump-first-amendment-a0a2446832e8596e66c6fccb8426c8aa">White House Correspondents’ Association dinner,</a> which Trump was attending.</p>
<p>The Secret Service has also found itself in the spotlight after other recent incidents.</p>

<p>The Justice Department last month subpoenaed New York Times journalists after they reported on security concerns involving the new, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-air-force-one-plane-qatar-8eb5da68e95d583b14811f85e62cbcd1">Qatari-gifted Air Force One</a>. The subpoenas, which were later withdrawn, came after The Times reported that Trump was urged to leave Turkey on the old Air Force One at the urging of the Secret Service.</p>
<p>Then, Trump earlier this month acknowledged that he had actually <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-air-force-one-iran-turkey-2c9400dc758641dfdcd1fd3ddd249158">slipped away from Air Force One</a> as he departed Turkey because the Secret Service and military wanted him on a “different plane” due to concerns that he was being targeted for assassination by Iran.</p>
<p>Trump only confirmed he slipped away after The Washington Post reported that he had taken part in the elaborate ruse in which some of his staff, Secret Service and journalists flew on the old model Air Force One while he was snuck onto an alternate military aircraft to get out of Turkey.</p>
<p>Last month, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/vance-secret-service-investigation-travel-d4364b9715854764030a77ee1f39621c">Secret Service also confirmed</a> that one of its agents serving on Vice President <a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jd-vance">JD Vance’s</a> security detail was being investigated over allegations tied to a suspected news leak. The Secret Service said the investigation was tied to a July MS NOW report detailing some of its agents’ frustration over last-minute travel requests from Vance and his family.</p>

The court said to pay up.  So where’s Secret Service’s overtime?

<blockquote><p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>There’s a recent Court of Federal Claims case regarding the U.S. Secret Service. Why is this such an important moment in that case?</p>
<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>Well, to give it some perspective, we have to go back 10 years. So, in 2016, the law firm I was working for at the time was contacted by a Secret Service agent who felt he was being improperly paid under federal law. We investigated that and determined that his concerns had merit. We filed a lawsuit in the United States Court of Federal Claims, where money actions against the federal government are handled, alleging various improper pay practices, one of which was unpaid overtime due to special agents in the Secret Service for work they had performed. That was the genesis of the lawsuit. It traveled its way up to the United States Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit in 2018. And in that case, the circuit court said that one of the pay practices the agency had, which we can discuss, was illegal. And the rest of the case since then has been about trying to get these agents paid for overtime they worked that they were not paid for.</p>

<p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>And what was the decision, then, recently in the Court of Federal Claims that moves this case to the next step?</p>
<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>After the pay regulation was struck down by the court of appeal in 2018, the case continued. The agency did not want to settle the case; they wanted to litigate the case. And that continued for another seven years. In 2024, the current judge on the case issued an order denying the agency the Secret Services’ motion essentially to dismiss the case, a motion for summary judgment, finding there were valid actions that should go to trial. One of the judge’s other orders was that the agency had improperly destroyed pay records, timesheets and other records that could be used to help establish how much over time the agents in the case were entitled to. That, I think, led the agency to perhaps reconsider its position. And last year, the court ordered the case into a mediation posture, where we have now tentatively struck a settlement deal — again, 10 years after the issue first arose.</p>
<p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>Secret Service overtime is a perpetual problem. They are understaffed, overworked, and anybody who watches what happens with the Secret Service workforce knows that those agents pull a lot of overtime. Have the policies changed so that they are at least recording pay properly today?</p>
<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>Like any other federal agency, the regulations are sometimes complicated and can lead to differing results. Secret Service agents are identified under federal law as special investigators, criminal investigators. And under the federal statutes, they are entitled to what’s called a 25% pay enhancement of their base pay. It’s called law enforcement availability pay; shorthand for it is LEAP. And that basically allows them to work an additional two hours every day of unscheduled duty, meaning things come up, they have to stay late, they have to go to a different site, they have to handle something that was not anticipated. The Secret Service has, since LEAP was applied to agent pay, scheduled their overtime under LEAP, so most agents now have 10-hour workday schedules. In addition to that, if an agent works additional unscheduled duty, they should be getting paid overtime. And the issue in the case was the regulation called for any unscheduled duty hours to have to have been worked consecutively — two or more consecutive hours between, for example, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., whereas many agents would come in at 7 a.m. and work until 8 a.m. and then stay late and work from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. And they were not getting paid for that. So the issue in the case was, how do we pay these agents now that the court has said that that consecutive hours requirement is no good? The agency still has their employees record their time, but the issues now are a little clearer because of the court’s rulings in this case and others.</p>
<p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>Nicholas Wieczorek is a member at Clark Hill. One thing that stands out about this case is how long it has taken to get even this far. What does this tell you about the difference between winning a legal ruling and actually getting the remedy?</p>
<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>The legal side of the case is just part of it. The other is the party’s position in the case. What I’ve observed over the last 10 years of dealing with the Secret Service as an agency is that it takes a very aggressive position on its litigation and aggressive position on its policies. I had believed in 2018, when that Court of Appeal spoke on the case, that it would be a matter of quick negotiation, settlement and payment. But the agency didn’t believe that and continued to litigate the case for a long time. I think part of that is a reflection of just agency culture. I think part of it is a reflection of agency attitude toward its workforce. And as we’ve seen in recent news events and the 2024 campaign for president, Secret Service has issues, one of which is morale of the workforce, which we don’t believe is especially good.</p>
<p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>Federal employees really across the government are watching a number of disputes play out right now involving terminations, bargaining obligations, and other workforce actions from the administration over the last 18 months or so. Are there broader lessons that folks should learn from this case about what happens after a court or an administrative body maybe determines that the government got something wrong?</p>

<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>Well, I think any lawsuit involving the federal government, you have to be prepared for a long haul. There are forces in play in the government. There are agency positions and people whose job it is to mind these types of things. And it just takes a long time to get a case set up in a position to work a resolution. In this particular case, after seven or eight years, we were able to posture it for resolution. Now our challenge is trying to communicate the fact of this settlement to the members of the workforce who are entitled to the settlement that has been tentatively agreed to. So, there are over 5,000 current and former Secret Service agents who are entitled to share in this settlement. We’re dealing with a time period between 2015 to 2018, and many people move and change addresses. The agency has sent out notice to the last known addresses of all of these agents; over 500 letters have come back. So, we need to figure out in the next 30 to 60 days how to spread the word about this case among those who are entitled to share in it and hopefully give them the ability to choose to participate.</p>

<p><strong>Terry Gerton </strong>It sounds like just reaching the people who are involved, potentially, in a case is one of the biggest challenges. But when you look across the federal workforce landscape, are there other major obstacles that make it difficult to translate these legal victories into practical outcomes for the affected employees?</p>
<p><strong>Nicholas Wieczorek  </strong>Well, in this case, as in the case of other litigation we’re involved in involving other federal law enforcement officers, many of the identities of these individuals is considered sensitive information. We cannot get our hands on a mailing list, an email list for all employees in a given agency to share information or communicate or inquire as to whether improprieties are going on. So it is very kind of happenstance that we get contacted from time to time by a federal employee who says, something is not going right in my agency. Once a case is set up as a class action, then you have full access to your class members, but between the filing and the class certification date, it is sometimes extremely difficult to communicate the fact that there’s even a lawsuit going on involving the workforce of a particular agency that people may be interested in.</p>
