Under the President, the Secretary of Defense directs and controls the Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the combatant commands, and the defense agencies and field activities. It was established by the National Security Act Amendments of 1949, which redesignated the National Military Establishment as the Department of Defense (10 U.S.C. 111).
